Aces and Eights at Springbok: the pay table that rewards 8s and 7s
Aces and Eights at Springbok deals one hand at a time on a Jacks or Better base, then adds three special four-of-a-kind awards: four aces or four 8s pay 80 coins per coin, four 7s pay 50, and other fours pay less. A pair of Jacks is still the smallest win, and nothing is wild.

One row on the game screen carries a label that does not fit those rules; it is shown exactly as displayed and explained below. A hand costs R0.05 to R25.00, played without a bonus.

One pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces. A pair of 10s or lower pays nothing.
- pays more than five times its 1-coin amount when all 5 coins are in play.
- † “4 Deuces w/Ace” is reproduced as the game labels it. This is the label the game screen shows, but deuces are not wild in Aces and Eights. The game's help page lists this position as other four of a kind, so treat the label as a display quirk and check the help page in the game menu.
- This table was not re-read at a second coin value. On the 12 titles that were read at both R0.05 and R5.00 a coin, the table did not change.

How Aces and Eights plays at Springbok
The rhythm is classic draw poker. Pick a coin size between R0.05 and R5.00, bet 1 to 5 coins and deal five cards. Mark the ones worth keeping, press draw, and the rest are swapped for new cards in a single replacement. Whatever you end with is checked against the table. The name nods to the "dead man's hand" of poker folklore, two pair of aces and eights, but the game pays that two pair like any other. What it rewards is four of a kind in the right ranks. Eights are the curious part: a pair of 8s sits below the Jacks-or-better line and pays nothing on its own, yet four of them pay as much as four aces.
Sevens get a row of their own a step lower, and every other four of a kind sits below that. With no wild cards and no kicker rows, the fifth card in a four of a kind never changes the award.
Each win can be banked as it stands or put up in Double or Nothing, a single higher-card-wins flip against the dealer that either doubles the amount or takes it.

The '4 Deuces w/Ace' row: label versus rules
The fifth row of the Aces and Eights pay table reads "4 Deuces w/Ace" on Springbok's game screen and pays 20 coins per coin. That label belongs to deuces-wild games. In Aces and Eights no card is wild, and the game's own help page lists plain Four of a Kind in that position.
The likeliest reading is a display slip, with the row standing for four of a kind in any rank that has no line of its own: 2s to 6s and 9s to Kings. That is an inference from the help page, not something the screen confirms, so Pay Table Room shows the label as the game prints it and the note under the pay table flags it. If a four of a kind in one of those ranks matters to you, open the help page from the game menu before you play for rand.
The same label turns up on Bonus Poker, another machine without wild cards, where the help page names a different set of ranks for that row.
What the rest of the Aces and Eights table pays
From the full house down, the table is Jacks or Better with one small tweak. The full house returns 7 coins per coin; then come the flush on 5, the straight on 4, trips on 3, two pair on 2 and a high pair on 1. The straight flush sits at 50.
The real character of a Jacks-based table is in how it pays four of a kind, and that is easiest to see rank by rank. The table below sets Aces and Eights beside two neighbours in the same lobby.
| Four of a kind | Aces and Eights | Jacks or Better | Bonus Poker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four aces | 80 | 25 | 75 |
| Four 8s | 80 | 25 | 25* |
| Four 7s | 50 | 25 | 25* |
| Four 2s, 3s or 4s | 20* | 25 | 40 |
| Four 5s, 6s, or 9s to Kings | 20* | 25 | 25* |
* Paid on the row the game screen labels “4 Deuces w/Ace”. Neither game has wild deuces; the ranks shown here follow each game's help page (Aces and Eights: other four of a kind; Bonus Poker: four 5s through Kings), not the label. Straight flush and full house are discussed in the text.
Against Springbok's Jacks or Better, the trade is plain: aces, 8s and 7s pay far more here, while every other four of a kind pays less, and the full house gains a coin (7 against 6). Against Bonus Poker the aces award is close, but Bonus Poker spreads its extra money over low ranks and a bigger full house, while only Aces and Eights rewards the 8s and 7s.
How it lines up with the published Aces and Eights tables
Wizard of Odds lists five versions of this game. Springbok's rows match the second one on that page; the first pays more for other four of a kind and for a full house, with every other row the same.
| Row | Springbok, 1 coin | Wizard of Odds, first table | Wizard of Odds, second table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four aces or eights | 80 | 80 | 80 |
| Four sevens | 50 | 50 | 50 |
| Other four of a kind | 20 (row shown as “4 Deuces w/Ace”) | 25 | 20 |
| Full house | 7 | 8 | 7 |
Straight flush, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair and Jacks or Better pay the same in all three. Wizard of Odds also publishes a return figure for each table; this site does not quote them.
One caveat on the source: Springbok's 5-coin column for Aces and Eights was only read at a single coin size, while 12 other machines were read at the smallest and the largest coin and showed no change between them.
Holding notes for Aces and Eights
Strategy here is about shaving the house edge on each decision, not about making the game pay. No published chart we found targets Springbok's exact table. The notes lean on the simple Jacks or Better order that Wizard of Odds publishes, and where the bonus fours could change a decision, the alternatives were compared draw by draw on this machine's rows.
- Two pair, the aces-and-eights hand included: keep all four cards. Two pair pays 2 per coin as it stands and leaves a one-card draw at a full house.
- Three aces, three 8s or three 7s: keep the three and draw two. There is no kicker row, so a fifth card held for company only removes a chance at the fourth.
- A pair of 8s or 7s: still a low pair that pays nothing by itself, but it is the start of a bonus four, so it is worth more than a pair of 5s or 6s with the same draw.
- Four to a flush against a low pair: the Jacks or Better chart keeps the flush draw. Counting every draw on Springbok's table, that still holds even when the pair is 8s, but the gap is much narrower than with a pair of 5s, because four 8s pay so well.
- A lone 8 or 7: not a high card. Unlike a Jack, a single 8 cannot become a paying pair, so it is no reason to hold.
For the full Jacks or Better hold order, see video poker strategy basics; to see this table beside every other machine in the lobby, open the pay table room on the home page.
Budget, practice and the phone-only lobby
Aces and Eights uses the lobby-wide betting grid, so a deal costs anything from R0.05 (one coin at the smallest size) to R25.00 (5 coins at the largest). The bonus fours are rare hands, so build a session budget around the hands that turn up often, and treat four 8s as a pleasant surprise rather than a plan. Only the royal flush pays extra for the fifth coin.

Questions players ask
What does '4 Deuces w/Ace' mean in Springbok's Aces and Eights?
It is the label the game screen shows on its fifth row, which pays 20 coins per coin. Deuces are not wild in Aces and Eights, and the game's help page lists that position as Four of a Kind, so it most likely covers fours in ranks without their own row. Check the help page in the game menu if it matters to you.
Is a pair of 8s a winning hand in Aces and Eights?
No. The lowest paying hand is a pair of Jacks or better. Eights only pay extra as four of a kind, which pays the same as four aces: 80 coins per coin at Springbok.
Which pays more in Aces and Eights, four 7s or four 8s?
Four 8s. They share a row with four aces at 400 coins at 5 coins, while four 7s pay 250.
Should I hold two pair of aces and eights?
Yes. Keep both pairs and draw one card: the hand already pays 2 per coin and can still become a full house. Breaking it up to chase four aces or four 8s comes out behind.
Does Aces and Eights count toward Springbok bonus wagering?
No. Springbok's terms list the games whose bets clear a bonus, and video poker is not one of them. Deal it when your balance carries no bonus at all.
